Introduction

In 2017 CORE secured a large-scale earthworks contract and primary infrastructure works at a major new business park on Gelderd Road and Asquith Avenue in Leeds.

The 70-acre site was a historical mining and open-cast area and had planning permission for over 1 million sq. ft. of commercial space.

The initial earthworks package involved large-scale geotechical improvement, featuring a combined approach of re-engineering and processing of sub-soils, along with dynamic compaction and earth reinforcement.

The final phase (Units 6 & 7) of works includes additional estate roads and S278 Works, in addition to probing, drilling and grouting of a redundant mineshaft prior to capping with concrete slabs which used 45m3 of concrete. The current works were completed by end of 2019.

Original Scope of works:

To remove an estimated 650,000 cubic metres of material from a large plateau that has been previously constructed. The material had to be stored around the perimeter of the site, to be placed back into the excavated area in engineered layers.

CORE’s infrastructure contract included 2400m of drainage & sewerage in addition to 1km of road, new services, attenuation pond, fencing and new pumping station.

The earthworks contract included substantial excavation and filling of up to 650,000m3 of material, large scale earthworks, dynamic compaction of a 45,000m2 area plus grouting of 25,000m2 and the creation of a new access road and stone platforms measuring 36,000m3.

Conclusion

There were many complex challenges to the project, including removal and processing of 100,000m3 of rock, excavation and transportation of the remaining material to temporary storage areas, sequencing of the earthworks to coordinate with dynamic compaction and the replacement of the material into the compacted excavated area in engineered layers. The use of our motor-scrapers represented the quickest and most cost effective method for moving large amounts of material around the site. The project was completed on time and within budget.
